Hong Kong director Stephen Chow’s new sports comedy Kung Fu Soccer is scheduled for release this July, becoming a highly anticipated highlight of China’s booming summer film market.As a spiritual follow-up to his 2001 classic Shaolin Soccer, the film retains Chow’s iconic silly and humorous style, creatively combining traditional Shaolin kung fu with women’s football. It tells the story of an underdog girls’ football team that integrates martial arts into competitions and makes an amazing comeback to win the championship. Currently in intensive post-production with massive visual effects work underway, the film finished shooting in 2025, aiming to capitalize on the popularity of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and celebrate the 25th anniversary of its predecessor (前身).
Industry experts are optimistic about the film’s timing. Beijing-based critic Shi Wenxue noted that the World Cup will fuel public discussions and boost the film’s topical appeal, while the July slot places it right in the heart of the booming summer movie season. Global distribution rights outside the Chinese mainland have been secured by Encore Films, with Maoyan Entertainment handling domestic release. On social media, both domestic and overseas fans have expressed huge anticipation, making Kung Fu Soccer one of the most talked-about titles of the summer.
