In Wuhan, central China, a special forest grows in the water. More than 10,000 pond cypress (池杉) trees grow out of the lake. Their tall branches create cool shade below. This “forest on water” has become a summer home for thousands of herons(苍鹭).
As summer temperatures rise, herons fly to this forest to escape the heat. The trees give them natural shade. Thousands of them rest among the branches or look for food in the shallow water. So many birds gathering together make a spectacular sight.
A bird expert explained why herons need this place. Herons cannot cool down easily in the sun. Their feathers keep heat in, and too much heat can make them overheat. This can harm their health. The water forest gives them a cool place to stay safe during the hot summer months.
